It wasn’t all that long ago that the McLaren 650S was improved upon by its successor, the McLaren 720S. The second nameplate in the Super Series lineup, the 720S quickly established itself as a powerhouse in the sports car market. That’s why last year saw the addition of a convertible variant to the vehicle’s offerings, which this year is known as the 2020 McLaren 720S Spider. There are plenty of convertibles out there in the sports car market, so we wanted to showcase just how great it is by seeing how it measures up to one of its competitors. In this case, we’ll compare it to the 2020 Ferrari Portofino.
2020 McLaren 720S Spider |
Vs |
2020 Ferrari Portofino |
710 HP | Horsepower | 592 HP |
568 lb-ft. | Torque | 561 lb-ft. |
2.9 s | 0-62 mph | 3.5 s |
212 mph | Top Speed | >199 mph |
While both vehicles are powered by V8 engines, the twin-turbo technology of the 720S Spider skyrockets its power and capabilities comparatively. Just a cursory glance at the table above shows that this is essentially no contest, but let’s work our way through the table just to show each aspect.
In the first half we took a look at power ratings, starting off with horsepower in which the 720S can generate 118 more than the Ferrari Portofino. There is a bit of saving grace for the Ferrari roadster, however, as it actually only gives up 7 pound-feet of torque, which isn’t very much at all.
However, that doesn’t seem to help the Portofino much in the latter half of the table, where we looked at performance. For starters, although 3.5 s is a very impressive time, it takes the Portofino 0.6 seconds longer to get from 0-62 miles per hour. And when each vehicle continues onto its top speed, the 720S Spider pushes things further by roughly 12 mph.
This comparison is pretty cut and dry, so if you’re looking for superior power and performance, in addition to the incredible style and premium features found in the 720S Spider, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us right here at McLaren Chicago.
