When shopping for a new vehicle and evaluating its performance metrics, terms like BHP and PS can be confusing. BHP stands for Brake Horsepower, while PS refers to Pferdestärke, or Metric Horsepower. Keep reading to learn more about these terms. If you’re considering a new McLaren, explore our online inventory and car financing options at McLaren Chicago, our dealership in Chicago, Illinois.
BHP is a unit of measurement, indicating the power output of an engine without considering losses such as friction, heat, or other auxiliary components like the gearbox, alternator, and water pump. In simple words, it is the maximum power an engine can generate under ideal conditions. It is measured using a dynamometer and the formula used is:
BHP=5252/Torque×RPM
On the other hand, PS, or Pferdestärke translates to “horsepower” in German. It is often referred to as Metric Horsepower. It’s a metric unit of power, equivalent to approximately 98.6% of one BHP.
1 PS = 0.9863 BHP or about 0.7355 kilowatts (kW)
Both BHP and PS measure the engine’s power output and the difference between them is negligible. While BHP is commonly used in the United Kingdom and the United States, PS PS is more prevalent in Europe. When comparing vehicles from different regions, it’s essential to consider the units used for power ratings. A car rated at 200 PS will have a slightly lower power output in BHP (around 197.26 BHP).
